Report: Japan prepares cooperation plan for Southern Kuril Islands

TOKYO, Feb 27 (PRIME) -- The Japanese government intends to suggest a detailed plan to develop the medical, fishery, ecology and tourist industries on the Southern Kuril Islands, which does not involve ownership matters, the Nikkei newspaper reported on February 26.

The proposals will include the possibility of Hokkaido doctors’ distant help to their colleagues working on Southern Kuril Islands, or a proposal to organize sea trips to the islands for Japanese tourists. Japan is also willing to suggest that jointly owned facilities to process fish and sea products be established.

Representatives of the Russian and the Japanese governments will discuss the plans on March 18 in Tokyo.
